KB visits the most eco-friendly wedding venue in the Kootenays. (And it’s not where you think.)

If you had some money and an old building to renovate, would you create condos for a quick return on your investment or would you build a legacy? American businessman John Ecland was so smitten by the community of Kaslo, that he chose the latter – taking the old Kaslo Hotel and turning it into one of the most charming and energy-efficient buildings in the West Kootenays.
 
The beauty of the hotel is in the details: from the shiny, copper eavestrough to the Shaker-style bar stools made of reclaimed wood. The beauty is also in the surrounds: the east rooms face Kootenay Lake and offer incredible views of the Purcell Mountains. As for the west rooms, their New Orleans-style balconies hover above the heritage building facades on Kaslo’s main strip.
